What Results To The Best Brew Possible?
Think of the following factors that will affect the resulting brew:
- Coffee to water ratio: How many cups of coffee do you want? You have to prepare the right amount of coffee grounds to the specific amount of water to brew your cups of coffee. We start at 17:1 with all of our manual brews.
- Appropriate grind size: Check the manual of your coffee maker and follow the recommended grind size. You’ll need a high-quality burr grinder with the ability to adjust the grind size of coffee. Rule of Thumb: Bitter brew = too fine
- Water temperature: How hot the water is will prep the coffee grounds and bring out the best flavors for extraction while brewing. We start at 197° with all of our coffee, then adjust from there.
- Brewing Time: You also have to control the amount of time that the coffee grounds are in contact with hot water to allow for the perfect brew. Make sure that you pour a small amount of water over the coffee grounds to wet them, and wait for about 30 seconds for them to “bloom”, releasing the most desirable coffee elements from the grounds.
All of these factors are the unifying principles in brewing with whatever coffee maker you have.
How Much Coffee and Water Should I Use?
If you find it difficult on which advice to follow for the perfect coffee-to-water ratio, you can start with the brewing standard of 2 tablespoons of coffee to 8 ounces of water. Of course in matters of taste there is no one recipe for success. Experiment with your equipment, timing, and ingredients to achieve results that satisfy you.
The Perfect Grind Size
Here’s a basic list of the perfect grind size for different coffee makers.
- Aeropress: Recommended grind size is fine to medium coarse grind depending on how long you’ll steep the coffee using the device.
- Drip Machine: The coffee extraction is dictated by the small hole of your coffee machine, so you’ll need medium-coarse to medium grind size.
- Duo Coffee Steeper: Steeping of coffee and water takes a longer time for around several minutes, so you’ll need a coarse grind for this.
- Chemex: Most pour over coffee makers require a medium to medium-fine grind. The grind size will vary between those two according to the size and flow rate of water of the device. With the Chemex we would go with a medium-coarse grind.
- Single-Cup Coffee Maker: If you have a brewer such as Verismo or Keurig, the coffee-to-water contact time is short, so you’ll need medium to medium-fine grind size.
- Siphon Brewers: Use a medium-fine grind size while brewing using the siphon method.
Take note that if you are going to make espresso, you’ll need extra fine grind size because the contact time between ground coffee and water is very short. If you’re going to make a cold brew, you have to grind coffee to coarse or extra coarse since the contact time between coffee grounds and water takes ages (we recommend 16 hours).
What Do I Need To Prepare Everything?
- Fresh Coffee Beans: Grinding fresh coffee beans before brewing is still way better than using pre-ground coffee. This brings out the full flavor and aroma of coffee which pre-ground coffee has lost along the way. Ensure the freshness of your coffee beans by storing in the valved bag they come in. Keep them in the cupboard and never refrigerate.
